Is IVF procedure more successful in the winter season? We asked a reproductive medicine consultant and here is what she has to say.
VF is a blessing for couples who are unable to conceive naturally. A lot of couples are opting for this method to embrace parenthood and they cannot be happier. However, not all IVF procedures turn out to be successful as there are chances of failure depending upon the case. Onlymyhealth reached out to
Dr. Jasneet Kaur, Consultant? Reproductive Medicine, Milann Fertility Hospital, Chandigarh to know about various factors that contribute to successful conception through IVF. Besides, we also enquired whether there is some particular season that is said to be the best season for IVF treatment. To know her responses, scroll down and read the article.
Which Season Is Best for Undergoing IVF Treatment?
According to Dr. Kaur, ?when it comes to IVF therapy, many couples have different perspectives. Some couples choose winters over summers because they consider it is more pleasant to become pregnant during the winter months while others prefer summers. However, we have found no variation in pregnancy rates across seasons. To ensure the effectiveness of the procedure, pregnant women should assure adequate vitamin D levels, maintain a healthy lifestyle, abstain from addictions such as smoking, alcohol and excessive intake of caffeine.?
Factors to consider while opting for IVF treatment
The number of couples experiencing infertility has risen exponentially over the last few decades. This has been related to changes in lifestyle, environment, and most importantly, women?s economic and intellectual goals, which have resulted in a delay in childbirth. The only constant in a woman?s reproductive capabilities is her age. As a result, the effectiveness of any infertility therapy is heavily reliant on a woman?s age. However, there are a few factors to consider while going for IVF therapy.
- Prepare yourself mentally and physically for it
- It is good to have a positive outlook but know that IVF may not always be successful
- Conduct thorough research about the IVF centre where you plan to get your treatment done
What causes failed IVF?
IVF does not always bring positive results but some cases may also experience failure. The causes for failed IVF procedure could be many including:
- poor embryo quality
- inadequate uterine lining
- an inappropriate cross-talk between the uterus and the embryo
- any anatomical factor missed earlier.
On the other hand, the success rate of IVF is dependent on:
- age of the women
- the quality of the eggs and sperms used
- the receptivity of the uterus
- the quality of the IVF lab.
Variables like lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, smoking, and other lifestyle factors can contribute to a drop in egg quality and reduce your success rates during IVF therapy.
What to do when IVF is not successful?
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the treatment options for infertility with the highest success rates still it?s never 100 percent. After a failed IVF cycle, one should not be disheartened or upset because there are several possibilities that can be offered. It is important to remember that even in patients with a favourable prognosis, the success rate of IVF is 60-70 percent.
To have a successful IVF, you must have a good quality embryo, a receptive endometrium, and a suitable cross talk between the endometrium and the embryo. Couples with a good prognosis are more likely to become pregnant on their first try, but for those that don?t, we make modifications in our treatment strategies to enhance success for the second embryo transfer by adding modalities not tried earlier.
Conclusion
Couples who wish to get therapy must meet the eligibility criteria. Women?s ages should be less than 50, while men?s ages should be less than 55. A woman must be in the good physical condition and free of any untreated chronic diseases. Also to be able to process the IVF procedure and its effects, a woman must be emotionally & mentally strong. This increases the chances of successful conception despite any specific season.
