World IVF Day 2023: Dos And Don’ts You Must Follow During IVF Treatment

It is essential for patients to follow certain dos and don’ts to maximise their chances of a successful outcome

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has emerged as a boon for couples facing infertility challenges. This groundbreaking medical procedure involves combining eggs and sperm outside the body, offering hope to those struggling to conceive naturally. This transformative technology has granted countless individuals and couples the joy of parenthood, making it a true blessing for families worldwide.

Celebrating the same is World IVF Day, which is observed on July 25 every year. On this day in 1978, Louise Brown became the first baby born using the IVF technique. As an increasing number of couples opt for IVF treatment in present times, it is essential for patients to follow certain dos and don’ts to maximise their chances of a successful outcome.

“IVF is a complex and costly procedure, and adhering to these guidelines can help improve the overall success rate and ensure a smoother experience for the individuals undergoing treatment,” Dr Nisha Pansare, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune said.

She shared the following dos and don’ts you must keep in mind during IVF treatment:

Dos:

Follow the doctor’s instructions: It is crucial to closely follow the instructions provided by your fertility specialist throughout the IVF treatment. This includes taking medications as prescribed, attending appointments, and following the recommended lifestyle changes.

Maintain a healthy diet: A well-balanced and nutritious diet is essential during IVF treatment. Consume foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support overall health and optimise fertility.

Stay hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water is vital for general well-being and reproductive health. Hydration can also help maintain good blood flow to the ovaries and uterus.

Get adequate rest: IVF treatment can be emotionally and physically taxing. Ensure you get enough rest and sleep to reduce stress levels and support the body during this process.

Practise stress-relief techniques: Engage in activities that help reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature. High-stress levels can negatively impact fertility and overall well-being.

Communicate with your partner: IVF can be emotionally challenging for both partners. Maintain open and supportive communication with your partner to navigate through the treatment together.

Educate yourself: Understanding the IVF process and knowing what to expect at each stage can alleviate anxiety and empower you to make informed decisions.

Continue gentle exercise: Engage in light and moderate exercise, such as walking or swimming, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Regular physical activity can help reduce stress and promote overall health.

Further, Dr. Dorothy Dessa, consultant, infertility specialist, Milann – The Fertility Specialists, said, ‘Maintain a positive mindset to reduce anxiety and improve well-being. Seek emotional support and insights from others going through similar experiences.”

Don’ts:

*Don’t skip medications: Consistency with medications is vital for the success of IVF treatment. Missing doses or altering the prescribed schedule can affect the outcome.

*Avoid smoking and alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can have a detrimental impact on fertility and the success of IVF. It is advisable to refrain from these substances during treatment.

*Steer clear of excessive caffeine: While moderate caffeine intake is generally considered safe, excessive consumption may be linked to reduced fertility. Limit your daily caffeine intake to a moderate level.

*Don’t engage in strenuous exercise: Avoid high-intensity workouts and heavy lifting during IVF treatment, as they may strain the body and potentially interfere with the procedure’s success.

*Don’t stress over the outcome: Although IVF can be emotionally challenging, try not to fixate on the outcome. Stress and anxiety can negatively impact fertility. Trust your medical team and the process.

*Avoid unverified supplements: While some supplements may be beneficial, it is essential to consult your doctor before taking any new supplements or herbal remedies, as some may interfere with fertility medications.

*Don’t neglect birth control: Until advised otherwise by your doctor, continue to use birth control as directed to avoid unintended pregnancy during IVF treatment.

*Don’t hesitate to seek support: IVF treatment can be emotionally taxing. Reach out to support groups, therapists, or counsellors who specialise in fertility to help cope with emotional challenges.

Further, Dr. Dessa said, “Steer clear of hot baths, saunas, or anything that exposes you to high temperatures. Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals or substances that may affect fertility.”
