What to Expect when Walking Into a Fertility Clinic

What to Expect when Walking Into a Fertility Clinic

Has it been sometime since you have been trying to have a baby without success? Have the questions from all your relatives and friends begun and is the stress and frustration getting to you? If your answer to all these questions is a ‘yes’, the first thing that you need to keep in mind is that you are not alone. A whopping 22 to 33 million couples in the reproductive age suffer from lifetime infertility in India in 2015 (Call for Action: Expanding IVF Treatment in India, Ernst & Young, July 2015). Infertility is a growing concern today and affects nearly 10-15 percent of married couples. Infertility is when a couple is unable to become pregnant after trying for a period of one year (if the woman is under 35 years of age), or for a period of six months (if she is over 35 years of age).

Not being able to conceive a baby and having to cope with the social stigma in India where relatives are breathing down your neck on when you will have a baby can be extremely overwhelming. What is important to note is that help is at hand. Certified fertility doctors can help you with your situation. In fact, currently, India successfully performs approximately 100,000 IVF cycles annually.

Don’t Waste Time: Consult with the Experts

If you are finding it difficult to conceive, you should seek the expertise of a qualified fertility specialist at a certified tertiary centre urgently so that the right treatment course can be chalked out for you and your partner. Once you can schedule a meeting with an accredited fertility professional, they will guide you and provide you with an individualized, comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

At your first visit, the fertility specialist will probably go through your medical history in depth, so as to chart out a future course of action. Keep in mind that every case is unique and hence you must ask the specialist every pertinent question that comes to mind. It is likely that you will be asked to go through some critical tests, including semen analysis, blood hormone testing, pathology screening and a pelvic screening.

On the basis of the test results, you and your partner can make an informed decision. A good tertiary centre will have good quality nursing, professional counselling and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that will allow for all teams to work together to ensure that you have the best chance of achieving a healthy pregnancy.

Intensive treatment such as (in-vitro fertilization) is not necessarily the only option for treatment. There are other more conservative infertility management options that could be suitable for you. However, should you require IVF, it is indeed heartening that the treatment is available right here in India at a cost 3-4 times lower than the US.

In essence, if you are struggling to conceive, opt for a specialist who has the requisite experience and a high success rate at a certified tertiary centre and give yourself the best possible chance to become a parent!
